KekeLingo - Pula - EP

An ode to the goddess of water, Pula sees drummer and vocalist KekeLingo (of The Muffinz) offer nourishment and solace by channelling tales of love through the lens of water’s qualities. A healing aura ensues with KekeLingo’s soothing utterances imbuing the EP with lightness as he articulates messages of hope and perseverance.

The Soweto native, born Gregory Kekeletso Mabusela, touches the soul in a signature blend of poignant lyricism and melodically delivered hums and chants. These uniquely conveyed linguistic expressions animate sonic frameworks characterised by different percussive textures, with invigoration of the spirit keeping them aligned.

Midtempo opener “Pula” calls for mother nature’s blessings upon a love union, with electric guitar strums emulating raindrops. A reprise—performed alongside Botswana’s Dato Seiko—is a soulful affair which closes the album. Lesotho’s Leomile and compatriot Muneyi, meanwhile, contribute to the folksy, John Lundun-helmed “Ithemba (Litsomo Version)” before the reworked rhythms of “Unale Gade (Remix)” offer encouragement. “Jeteme” doubles as a Zakes Bantwini- and Mpho.Wav-guided foray into Afro-tech and nod to creative muse Salif Keïta’s “N B’I Fe”, encapsulating Pula’s sense of rejuvenation.
