On his sixth studio album, South African house veteran Prince Kaybee maintains his soulful yet sinewy sound as he steadily navigates the new decade. After contributing a bunch of hits to the 2010s era, he returns with a liking for electro, which underscores a large part of Music Theory with flaring synths that embellish chiming keys and orbital pads. Like all of Kaybee’s releases, Music Theory is replete with vocalists who breathe life into his productions—from Bongeziwe Mabandla’s soaring falsetto on album opener “Mpendulo” to Azana’s airy alto on “Amaphiko Ezono” and “Inkumbulo”. Starr Healer floats on “Oh Boy” and the percussion-heavy album closer “Amagabade”, while Robot Boii lends his youthful energy to “Yimi Yena” via sparsely structured raps and chants. But, more than he has on prior albums, Prince Kaybee also indulges himself here, placing the focus on production with a handful of instrumental songs like “Rhythm Expression”, “Hatau Tau”, “Trap & Foshol” and “Euphony”.
