In the sequel to De Mthuda’s 2020 release Story to Tell, Vol. 1, the pioneering amapiano producer enlists top South African vocalists to deliver stories of love and existential life matters. On “Imizamo”, Nobuhle captures the shakiness that results in giving it your all but feeling like it’s all in vain, while the likes of Mthunzi, Sino Msolo, Ami Faku and Mnqobi Yazo explore the intricacies of romantic relationships. Though album opener “Sivulele” takes a turn into soothing Afropop, laced by the ethereal vocals of Mthunzi, for most of the project, De Mthuda’s take on amapiano remains soulful and tethered to kwaito as he retains the genre’s trademark bassline and Korg M1 synthesiser-tinged sound that carries songs like “Mari Ye Phepha”, “Aveng’thanda” and “Imizamo”.
